Information about Centro Studi Baskerville
Centro Studi Baskerville is a research center for communication, founded in Bologna in 1994, that carries out its activities, without profit, in collaboration with the Instituto di Discipline della Comunicazione of the University of Bologna, other Italian and foreign research institutes, with schools and corporations.
Centro Studi Baskerville is completely self-financed by its activities.
The Center concentrates its activities in three areas:
1. Documentation:
In this field the Center publishes texts and documents on the theme of information and communication: books, papers and reports. It allows students, teachers, communication professionals access directly to the source (in particular using the computer network). Among the principle activities of documentation: the Library of Communication Science (a series of essays), Baskerville OnLine and Internet.
2. Theoretical Research:
With the collaboration of university professors and media professionals, the Center promotes the analysis and reflections on the most significant themes of communication by means of finalized research projects and with an interdisciplinary Ôscientific-humanisticÕ approach.
3. Applied Research:
Some areas of particular interest relative to information technology, sectors that set the boundaries of the great cultural, social, or economic transformations, are the subjects of expert research in which the theory and the technique is confronted with the Italian reality, and where the objective is to make real this kind of system.
Each project is coordinated by a person in charge and is developed by contributors or students (primarily from the University of Bologna Institute of Communication Science and from the Economics Faculty of the University of Bergamo).

* The name 'Baskerville' was chosen in honor of John Baskerville (1707-1789), the English printer and typographer who transformed the art of printing into a technique and a modern industry.
He was in charge of typography at the University of Oxford, and experimented with bookbinding, paper, ink and innovative techniques of printing. He designed the typeface that bears his name, which today is still one of the most elegant and legible ever made.
Centro Studi Baskerville is dedicated to his curiosity, creative spirit, to his intellectual-workmanship and to his pragmatic perseverance and vision.
